Das Barbecü will be an evening of musical comedy and melodrama set in the heart of modern-day Texas. How exactly do Richard Wagner’s four-opera cycle Der Ring des Nibelungen and the Lone Star state combine to produce a musical melodrama? This is a valid question and it’s not always clearly answered, but deep in its heart, Das Barbecü tries. Not only is twenty hours of German opera condensed into a twanging tale of mismatched lovers and feuding families, but some of the more subtle aspects of Wagner’s original story are brought into the spotlight.
